What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is an injectable medication that slows stomach emptying, making you feel full longer after eating. It is used in combination with diet and exercise to help lose weight and keep it off. It is also used to lower the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes and other medical conditions associated with obesity. It is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist.

It comes as a solution in a prefilled pen to inject under the skin, usually once per week on the same day at any time of the day. It is injected into the upper arm, thigh, or abdomen. It is recommended to change the injection site each time. If you miss a dose, do not try to make up for it with more medicine. If you miss a dose by more than 5 days, call your doctor.

A study found that those who received semaglutide lowered their BMI and lost more weight than those in the placebo group. It was also found that the semaglutide treatment caused a more gradual decrease in the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and the risk of major cardiovascular events and death was 18% lower in the semaglutide group.
