Toothache Remedies and Treatments

Tooth pain is a common affliction that can range from dull and constant to sharp and throbbing. It can be distracting and make it difficult to focus on work or even sleep, but it’s important to treat the pain and address its root cause as soon as possible so that it doesn’t worsen. There are several home remedies that can help alleviate a toothache, including rinsing with salt water, applying a cold compress, or chewing on a clove. These should be used with caution and in conjunction with over-the-counter pain relievers to ensure the most relief.

Toothache Relief: When to Seek Help from a Dentist

Toothaches are typically caused by an infection in the center of a tooth, which is called a dental pulp. This can happen due to a variety of reasons, including gum disease, tooth decay and damaged fillings. If left untreated, a toothache can lead to a dental abscess.

The best way to determine what is causing a toothache is to see a dentist, who will take X-rays and perform an examination of the teeth and jaw. The dentist will ask questions about when the toothache started, where it is located, and how severe it is. He or she may also recommend a treatment plan. In the meantime, a person can rinse the mouth with salt water or with diluted hydrogen peroxide (1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water). Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) may be taken according to package instructions.
